Some 15 dead birds in French departments are being examined in a search for the virus. France is the sixth European country after Italy, Greece, Slovenia, Germany and Austria to declare the presence of H5N1 among wild birds on its territory. Confinement Confinement of all poultry, whether on commercial breeding farms or in barnyards, is now in effect throughout metropolitan France. That means that it is no longer applies only to poultry located in atrisk wetlands zones and in departments with a high density of breeding farms. Drinking and eating troughs must be protected to prevent any contact with wild birds. Of course, for small household breeders, the measures are adapted: wire fencing to keep the chickens from wandering and a roof over the pen to prevent contact with migrating birds. Vaccination In the duck and goose breeding farms of the departments of Landes, LoireAtlantique and Vendee, which cannot confine the birds, these birds will be vaccinated ''in accordance with Community regulations''. This preventive vaccination is still waiting for a green light from the Permanent Veterinary Committee of the EU Commission, however. French Agriculture Minister Dominique Bussereau is arguing his case in Brussels today [20 February]. It is understood, of course that if a source of the virus were to be found in a breeding farm, agreement of the EU Commission would be immediate for vaccination of the poultry of the other breeding farms included within the security perimeter. By next week, 3m doses of a veterinary vaccine that corresponds to the specifications of the ministry's invitation to bid and is effective for several species of poultry will be ready. They are part of an order of 15m doses placed with the Intervet company in the Netherlands. On 24 January 2006, the French government granted temporary and renewable authorization for sale of this vaccination to professionals. Therefore this is not, strictly speaking, a definitive authorization to put it on the market, which, moreover is desired neither by the government nor by producers! If the test on the genome of the virus is positive, tissue samples are sent to the Ploufragan National Reference Laboratory, which conducts additional tests. If these tests, in turn, are positive, it will be necessary formally to wait for confirmation from the WHO international reference laboratory in Weybridge, Great Britain. France will have already reported the animal cases to the EU Commission in the meantime, however. It is now three weeks since the demonstrations provoked in the Muslim world by the publication in Denmark of a number of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad began, and the storm has not yet abated. In Nigeria last weekend a number of churches were burned to the ground, while in Pakistan, General Musharraf's government is now the focus of Islamist wrath. A handful of cartoons which appeared in an obscure newspaper in a country that has never harmed a fly were enough to spark a global crisis. Dozens of people have died as a result.
